ConfigMgr 2012 / SCCM 2012 SP1 Step by Step Guide

Welcome to my System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 Step by Step Guide. These posts will include a full implementation and configuration of Config Mgr 2012 SP1 using Windows Server 2012 and SQL 2012.

(You can also use this guide for the implementation of SCCM 2012 R2. There is only one difference in prerequisites - ADK 8.1 is required instead of ADK 8.0. This is highlighted in the Prerequisites section.)

They will help you to learn more about the product and allow you to get started in your lab environment.

  1. Hi Gerry when will you post steps for Wake on LAN and Out of Band Management?
    love these blog posts

  2. Gary do you have this step by step in a doc?

  3. I'm sorry. I don't. I just publish directly to the blog.

  4. I have posted the Wake on LAN process which can be implemented to work well. However the Out of Band Management feature has proven to be very troublesome and, quite frankly, not worth the effort. It's very easy to implement. However the provisioning of the AMT devices seems to be very hit and miss. I guess that's why the feature isn't very popular.

  7. My I request step by step guide for installing App-v 5.x client for workstations using both methods (MSI and EXE)through CM 2012 SP1. I want to deploy App-v client in lab setup. I have a full App-V 5 infrastructure (i.e Database, Management & Publishing Server) all running on a single Windows Server 2012. I have sequenced a # of apps including Office 2013 and tested on a client Win 7 Machine. All published apps are available for use and running fine without any issues. Just want to install App-v client for ALL SYSTEMS within CM 2012.

  8. I'm sorry. I won't be able to create blog posts to order. I create posts based on work that I carry out for customers. I previously deployed the App-V 4.6 client using SCCM 2007 and that was pretty straightforward. Version 5 via SCCM 2012 will be no different. You just need to be careful that you research all the required prerequisites - there are quite a few Visual C++ and .Net Framework updates required. You then create SCCM Applications based on the type of file extension and deploy them sequentially.

  9. Hi Gerry

Thank you for all you have done and countless hours you spent to share your experience with us.
Your page is the most valuable resource that I found.

Is it possible to create some articles about migrating from 2007 to 2012?

  30. Hi Gerry,
I did not see the Step by step guide but it should be more than enough for beginners to deploy SCCM 2012 SP1 . I have a question .
1- How I will know that what went wrong to a client who are not a SCCM Client means while install agent?
2- How I can force the agent without right click and install client?
3- How I can clear the total number of computer at risk?

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. Check out ccm.log file on the server.
    2. You could enable Automatic Client Push for the Site (right click site > Client Installation settings > Client Push). Then the client will automatically be installed as soon as the computer is discovered.
    3. I don't understand this question

  34. Excellent Guide.... One quick question - In our setting (CM 2007) the applications advertised show up a bit late in run advertised program. Is their any option in config manager or on the client side to initiate the application advertised to show in RAP immediately when user login. User mostly have to wait like 15 minutes for all applications to show up in RAP. We have automated silent install for most of the applications. User just have to select the applications and the install will go in the background without any user action.
I even tried Machine and User policy initiation - yet the applications do not show up in RAP immediately. Appreciate if you can help me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. You need to Initiate Policy Retrieval as soon as possible after logon. Why not add a logon script that does this? You can find an example here

  37. Thank you very much Gerry
I'm very thankful for such great topics series
I've a question, what about the 'out of band management' feature?
It's complicated and hard to understand

    ReplyDelete
  38. You're quite welcome. The Out of Band Management feature, as you say, can be quite complicated to implement. You also need to make sure that you open the correct ports on your firewalls to allow it to work (443, 16993 and 16995). However it isn't very popular and I don't bother with it.

The reason is it's limitations. It only supports certain chipsets (and not current ones). These are the chipsets that are supported (there are more recent versions - AMT 7.0, AMT 8.0 and AMT 9.0).

    • Intel AMT version 3.2 with a minimum revision of 3.2.1
    • Intel AMT version 4.0, version 4.1, and version 4.2
    • Intel AMT version 5.0 and version 5.2 with a minimum revision of 5.2.10
    • Intel AMT version 6.0 and version 6.1

You can see that there are considerations if you don't extend the schema. It's actually no big deal. I've described how to do it here

    3. You want both ms180 and ms182 to be installed but you want ms180 to be installed first. Create two applications or packages. Configure ms180 to be a dependency of ms182. Then deploy ms182 to a collection.

  45. Hi Gerry,

Sorted out the last problem i had with my SCCM installation,it was because of the WADK as you told me ;-).

Today at work a doubt arose.

We are involved in a project about a clean installation of an SCCM 2012 R2 infrastructure with SQL 2012 SP1 and on top of Server 2012 R2 (latest technologies).

We have over 1300 end user devices splited across our main site,2 datacenters and 18 remote offices.

I know that the best practice is to deploy an standalone site server with a local SQL,apart from the benefits we get over the SQL control and permissions simplification.

Our project not only involves one stream as we have a desktop stream, remote access solution,PKI,MBAM,etc...

Within the Management stream (SCCM & MBAM) i suggested that the MBAM could use the SCCM database as the only purpose would be to store the client recovery keys.

Now a colleague came to me today saying that he needs SQL space for VMware View.

I've designed the type of infrastructure my client needs for SCCM/SQL but know am not sure if it's a good practice to delegate SCCM database for other purposes.Suggested that SCCM database should only be used for SCCM purposes, therefore additional SQL databases should be deployed and that way additional SQL licenses for my client.

Do you agree with me?Or it doesn't matter if SCCM SQL is used to store other kind of data as long as we got the sufficient resources for it to work properly?

So the question is,taking into account this scenario, what would the best solution be like, several SQL databases across the organization and that way we dedicate a SQL only for SCCM&MBAM and additional SQL for VMware view and other technologies that might need it or instead we can deploy a central SQL for SCCM and the rest of technologies giving for granted the hardware resources we would probably need in that scenario?

Sorry for the long question but i'd really appreciate a hand on this.

    Regards,

    Felipe.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Felipe,

I'm with you on this. I always recommend a local SQL that is dedicated to SCCM and it's related technologies (WSUS, MDT etc). I don't want other databases using these resources. Also, Microsoft give you the local SQL for free if you only use it for SCCM. Once you add another database you have to pay for the SQL license.

    Regards,
    Gerry

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Gerry,

Do you have any link to Microsoft's website relating this topic? Not about a local/remote SQL for SCCM but if it's best practice to dedicate that database only for SCCM purposes and different instances for different applications.

    Thanks a lot.

    Felipe.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't Felipe,

Microsoft don't usually publish that kind of information. Best practice is normally developed by the community and people's experience. If you need something in writing for a customer I would suggest you ask the question in the ConfigMgr Technet Forum. and then present the answers to the customer. The answers will be by community experts (I may answer myself if I see it). Here is the link:

  53. Hi Gerry,

I'm looking with regards to Bandwidth Requirements for SCCM 2012 SP1.
I would like to know Bandwidth Requirements to help in designing for Branch Offices scenario.

Where I can get information about it?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Surprisingly there is no official information about this. It's because all infrastructures are different and there are so many features that could be implemented in ConfigMgr. There are guidelines on when you would use Secondary Site vs Distribution Points. In borderline cases the advice would be to deploy DPs and monitor WAN links to verify that the traffic is within acceptable parameters. If it isn't use a Secondary Site.

You can find "Planning for Network Bandwidth in Configuration Manager" here

  63. Hi Gerry,

To echo others on this blog, this site is brilliant, SCCM can be a bit of a monster.

I have a 2007 SCCM install and have been tasked with migrating this to SCCM 2012, I understand that I will have to first install SC 2012 with a new DB and have this up and running first, then migrate across the objects, collections etc from 2007, I just have one question that I need some clarity on before I start.

Can I install SC 2012 with a primary site along side my SCCM 2007 primary site on the same domain? I am assuming as long as they have different SQL db's and different names this should be ok, or am I wrong? Any advice or pointers on this would be much appreciated.

It's for ConfigMgr 2012 but the principle is the same for 07. You need to ensure that the NIC driver is added to the boot image. Also create a driver package and add it to your task sequence.

    1. It's been so long since I did that exam Paul, I can't quite remember. The one thing I do recall is that there was quite an emphasis on knowing which was the correct log file to use in a given situation.

Regarding DR, ConfigMgr is not a real-time application like Exchange, for example. In my opinion it doesn't matter so much if there is a little down-time. In general I don't think it's necessary to try and implement highly available environments. ConfigMgr 2012 can be recovered from SQL backup alone. Therefore I spend more time ensuring that the site can be recovered in an acceptable time-frame - a couple of hours.

If this is only happening on a few PCs you've been quite lucky. Client Push is normally about 90% successful. You can't be responsible for the state of every client out there.

At this point I would recommend that you install the client manually.
Browse to \\SCCMServer\SMS_XXX\Client and launch ccmsetup.exe (XXX is your site code).

Alternatively I'm a big fan of using a computer startup script to get the client out there using Group Policy. This is the best one:

I am working for deskptop OS migration from windows XP to Windows 7 in sccm 2012 R2 environment.
Created the boot.wim file 3.0 version by using WAIK tool, and injected all driver files into the boot.wim. Added into sccm 2012 R2 server and distributed to corresponding Distribution Point.
Created Tasksequence in my first step to "restart the computer" using this boot.wim file.
Deployed the task sequence to windows-xp collection
XP machine is restarting and displaying with the below task sequence error
    Task Sequence Error
"Windows PE initialization Failed with error code 0x80040154"
Restarted the machine and then show the below error as dos mode
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware software change migration
    cause. To fix the problem

    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next"
If you do not have this disc, contact your systems administrator

I had tried following someone else's step by step guide and had been banging my head against a wall having SCCM apparently installed but the clients unable to install. A complete uninstall and then following your guide - in particular the prerequisites that had been mostly skipped over in the other guide, and presto - all my clients automatically discovered and set up.

  80. Hi Gerry,
I can't seem to find any information on this, so here goes:
If I setup a SCCM 2012 R2 environment, add some clients, task sequences, applications etc and use it for a while, is there a way that this entire setup could be migrated to a different forest (a brand new one) with the same version of SCCM) without having to start all over again (keeping my clients and sccm info but obviously transferring them to the new server?). We are trying to decide if we can start using SCCM now on our current infrastructure or if we have to wait until the new forest is implemented and start then,

any ideas from anybody, I've read so many mixed articles with no clear cut answers,

    regards

    1. Hi Liam.

Unfortunately there is no silver bullet for this. It's not supported to change the domain membership of a ConfigMgr site system so that's out.

You will have to install ConfigMgr again in the new forest and create a new site. Then you would configure a migration hierarchy between the two environments (assumes a trust relationship) (as they are the same version). You can then migrate what you wish.

    1. You're welcome Gurpreet.
      1. This is probably because you have deployed your task sequence to "Unknown Computers". When you delete a computer from the database it becomes Unknown and therefore can use the TS. This is a good practice scenario.
      2. You can deploy multiple task sequences to Unknown Computers and they will be available as a list to choose from.
      3. Yes, you can use driver packages for this - I've documented the process on the blog.

  91. Hi Gerry,

I had a query regarding SCCM -2012. I work for an IT services company. I was told about SCCM and was asked to implement the same as part of the client's request. I went ahead in this process, and I have followed all the steps that are mentioned in your blog and i was able to set a system on which I have installed SCCM 2012 and have also created a device collection. Now I want to test whether I can achieve the purpose I set out with, i.e. I want to deploy an application to a remote system using the system where I have set up SCCM 2012. I followed the processes mechanically and now I do not know how to test whether what I have done works or not. Kindly help me out. I have the following queries:
    1. Can I connect any system remotely to the system which has my SCCM 2012 and try to run an application in that system? If so how do I do it? ( where does the concept of domain name come here?, should I change the DNS server name for this?)
    2. The second question is , I know it is trivial, but forgive me for this. What are the pre requisites that any remote system should have (in terms of software, settings etc etc) so that I can connect the system which has SCCM 2012 to it?

Kindly reply. It would be of great help.

    2. A web server certificate that is installed on the enrollment point for secured communication with the out of band service point during the provisioning process.

    3. A web server certificate that is installed on each computer that is managed out of band so that communication is authenticated and is encrypted by using Transport Layer Security (TLS).

  110. Hi Gerry,

I like to know, How much time required to get client get reflected in configmgr console. when a PC configured with the Site code.

    1. It really depends on your environment but clients should report their status to the ConfgMgr console shortly after the client is installed.

    1. I've never seen that happen Mohi. See here for the correct process to add new boot images

  112. This guideline of ConfigMgr 2012 really helpful for those clients and beginners too, which have less knowledge of configuring data. They are always trying to take outsourcing services from other companies at their fixed prices.

  113. Hi Gerry,

    Any ideas on below?

I've had a problem deploying SCEP from SCCM 2012 to a test collection of 3 machines.
    I was getting below errors:

component SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER MP Control Manager detected management point is not responding to HTTP requests.
The HTTP status code and text is 500, Internal Server Error.

component SMS_MULTICAST_SERVICE_POINT MCS Control Manager detected MCS is not responding to HTTP requests. The http error is 500 Internal Server Error.

I resolved the above errors by removing Site Managment Role and un-installing IIS Role.
I then re-installed IIS and added the Site Managment Role in Configuration Manager. This stopped the errors but now SCEP is getting deployed to All systems. Is there a way i can stop this deployment to all systems i was only planning to deploy to test collection to test first.I dont know where it has come from?

    thanks

    1. Have a look at your Client Settings policies > Endpoint Protection tab. You should create a new custom client settings policy and enable "Manage Endpoint Protection". Then you deploy this policy to your test collection. If you enable this on the default client settings it will apply to all clients.

  114. Thanks for the reply Gerry.I have a new Policy assigned to test collection which is fine but Yes "Manage Endpoint Protection" was enabled on the default client settings policy. I didn't realise enabling on default policy would automatically apply it to all clients without deploying to a collection. Many Thanks for pointing that out. Your guides are great. Thank you

  115. Hi Gerry 1 more Ques if you have time to reply. Would re-installing IIS & re installing Managment Point that i had done for trying to resolve issues deploying SCEP client now cause me problems Deploying OS images(They were working fine before i had problems with Scep). PXE boot clients are getting no Boot Filename Received? thanks

    1. It certainly could Stephen. I would suggest disabling and re-enabling PXE on the DP. This will involve multiple reboots as WDS will uninstall and re-install automatically.

  117. Hi Gerry,

I have been following your blog more than a year. Currently i'm facing an issue. Could you pelase advice.

Issue: When attempting to deploy a Task Sequence via SCCM 2012 OSD (Using bootable media), the Task Sequence fails almost immediately after it boots into WinPE with the following error message:

An error occurred while retrieving policy for this computer (0x80004005). For more information, please contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator.

The client was able to PXE boot and run WINPE environment, once the client had initialised and it queried the SCCM server for the Task Sequence (s) the client generated the Failed to get Client Idenity error.

It was working fine prevoulsy and i have deployed OS on many PCs. It hapened suudenly on all new PCs.

Examining the SMSTS.log shows the following error message:
Failed to Get Client Identity (80004005)

Also,i have performed the below tasks:
    - Able to ping SCCM Host IP Address & DNS Record from client.
    - Changed the Date & Time in the client BIOS.
    - Enabled DHCP Option 66 set

Still not resolved. Do i need to do anything with Management Point, IIS or anything else..

    Higlhy appreciated your advice.

  121. Hi Gerry, Thanks for this wonderful blog, I just want to ask 1 Question.
Which is the best and more accurate way to get the status of deployment Reporting or Deployment is Monitoring Tab ?

  122. Both are useful. You can get more detail in the reports.

  123. Hi Gerry,

I have an existing installation of SCCM 2012 R2, and we are looking to completely rebuild, because we are having a lot of issues with things like software deployment and getting the MDT integration to work for UEFI imaging.

How would you suggest doing this? I was thinking of simply building a whole new Hierarchy from scratch, but then I am not sure how all of my clients would be reconfigured to point to the new one.

    ReplyDelete
  124. You didn't say how big your environment was. You could rebuild everything and re-install your clients - no problem.

    1. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I work for a mid sized College with one main campus and 5 remote campuses. we have around 1500 clients, so reinstalling them all is something I am trying to avoid. I have one Primary site server with 5 secondary site systems in each region.

I am ready to click the "Install" button on the new Primary Site server, but I am not 100% sure how my clients will behave once I have 2 separate standing hierarchies on the network.
Can the clients be switched over with something as simple as a GPO to change the Site code?

      Delete
    2. That's not a huge number of clients so you could safely reinstall them. However you can actually use a script to change the site code. Make sure the new site is at the same SP or CU level as the old one.

Steve Thompson has a good script here
